Back in October I traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts to the prestigious campus of Harvard University. I had been contacted by an amazing team (Producer/Director Melodie Carli & Filmmaker Juan Carlos Borrero) who were working on a documentary named “A Call for Peace.” The purpose of this documentary was ‘to uncover the importance of human respect and relevance of open dialogue while explaining state of the art negotiations techniques and strategies.’ A main topic of discussion was the peace processes in Colombia and how President Juan Manuel Santos (who served as Colombian president from 2010-2018) + a team of international negotiation advisors came together to establish these processes.
Participants in the panel included: President Juan Manuel Santos, Dudley Ankerson, Bernie Aronson, Shlomo Ben Ami, Jonathan Powell, Sergio Jaramillo and William Ury.
On October 17th and 18th the film crew and myself set up for 2 days of filming at the historic Loeb House on Harvard’s Campus. My role was to take behind the scenes photographs of interactions and the discussions throughout the day. This was a very “intimate” setting as we were in a small room with a “round table” seating style that allowed everyone to be seen and heard. Session after session, the panel began to dig deeper into the process and all of the phases of the establishment of the peace building process.
As I captured key moments between foreign minsters, leading global peace negotiators and world-renowned diplomats I began to feel so lucky to be in the presence of people who have worked so hard for peace in this world. In the words of President Santos: “It is much easier to make war than it is to make peace.” The premiere viewing of this documentary was held on December 4, 2018 at the United Nations ECOSOC Chamber. Stay tuned for the next blog post to get an inside look at the premiere and exactly what Art By Court Winter’s part was in all of it!
